Killing-Birds

Killing Birds are a guitar & drums two piece who formed somewhere in Canberra earlier this year. They finished their first EP Her Joy last week without even having played a show yet (at least I think they haven’t). No doubt they are big Nirvana fans with the EP sometimes sounding like the lost B-Sides to Nevermind. Regardless of that, these guys have written some great songs. The eight track release will be out sometime next month, I’ve only posted the first track Plume, if you want a copy get in contact with them at their Myspace or keep your eyes out for them live, apparently they’re tight as fuck.

Hoodlum Shouts »

Hoodlums

“Enter Hoodlum Shouts who defy cyclical trends with their debut EP Horses and Human Hands. With what we believe is a contribution, rather than trend, to the affectionately nicknamed era I call ‘Australian-post-colonial-punk’. This release would have recognisable past and present bands like The Birthday Party, The Stabs, The Triffids, (early) Hunters & Collectors, Midnight Oil and The Drones (if the majority of these bands had died in their primes) turning excitedly in their graves.” (Birds Love Fighting)

Check out the track History’s End from the Horses and Humans Hands EP, which you can pick up from Landspeed Records in Canberra or from Missing Link in Melbourne.

Kasha’s, pulsating debut release, Five Songs for Sunstroke is a triumphant mix of kraut and experimental math rock speckled with poetic spoken word, fuzzed out bass, free form drumming and sharp edgy guitar. Voss »

voss

Voss’ shimmering debut ‘The Inland Sea’, filled with treasures, maps and adventures. If you want to go on a post-colonial trip without leaving the comfort of your rising-damp bedroom walls, Voss will trundle you somewhere you’ve never been to. You’ll find harangue guitar-work and lilting fiddle-folk. You’ll unearth buried histories you won’t hear anywhere else in Canberra. You’ll get close if you go to one of their live shows. But there’s no promise they’ll take you back to where you came from, and that is a comforting thought.” (From Birds Love Fighting)

Primarily made up from Ex-ManKilled members, Voss’ long awaited (overdue) debut album is a finely crafted musical journey. Wedged somewhere between other notable Australian acts such as Dirty Three and The Drones, Voss’ The Inland Sea is now available to buy through our online store for $15. It comes with a free poster by the amazingly talented Alice Carroll (and free shipping). Get on it!

After dropping the melancholy weight of his first release, Lets Hear It For Love grew on me pretty fast. Its a different feel, but I dig it.

Assassins 88 »

assassins88

Assassins 88 is a bass and drums combo from Australia. Their debut album “Go Go Second Chance Virgin” matches the simplicity of 60′s pop with the rawness of punk rock, all condensed into lo-fi fuzz. Described by the Rose Quartz blog as “young & dumb and pumping with hormones and cheap beer”, the album’s tracks are no-brainer epics that lay on the melodrama and pull at the heartstrings, and plays like a house party in a John Hughes film, making the Daniel Johnston cover at its end the perfect comedown.

The Bionic Hearts »

the-bionic-hearts

The Bionic Hearts is Canberra’s own Gemma Nourse. This self titled compilation was recorded late last year in Darwin and is a lovely little release. Gemma has an ethereal quality found in similar Australian acts like Sarah Blasko yet there is also an airy sense of darkness reminiscent of earlier Elliot Smith. Check it out, the second track Hypnotize is amazing.
