J.W Sparrow & The Miner Birds »

jwsparrow-cover-lg

This is the debut solo release for Warwick JW Smith, founder of Birds Love Fighting Records, and familiar face in bands such as Mankilled, The Gashes and now bassist for Cat Cat. This new hand painted EP is now available to buy through our friends Birds Love Fighting Records, but if you don’t manage that they have kindly put it up for free download!!

The release is an example of loose, discord and atmospheric guitar, droning organ creating improvised pop songs that dives into, without sounding like a downer, situations that are under the influence of emotion. With having all that said, there is a diversion in track 6, with an improvised epic power jam with drummer Leon Twardy. Don’t let it get you down! the last song Wasted, is a nice track of solidarity to those of us who have literally stumbled into bed and woken up the next day feeling wasted.

Solaris

Solaris was the concept album never officially released by the band ManKilled. This is ambient doom reminiscent of Sunn O))) and Boris and undoubtedly their best work. An epic trip into low end hell with thick and heavy bass drones and screeching guitars so sharp, it may give you tinnitus. This is the album ManKilled were formed to create.

ManKilled - Deer Split

Released as a split EP with Shoeb Ahmad on the label Hello Square Recordings. “Deer” has grinding bass lines so thick that its like trudging through cosmic swamps of a doom delirium. Needles to say, this EP is epic.

ManKilled Ouroboros

More brutal noise from ManKilled. This is more of an ambitious recording than the previous two, and sees them making the slow transition into sludge territory. Psychedelic echoes of suburban sheds, haunting and violent jams, best listened to with stereo headphones.

Jonny Telafone

Jonny Telafone is a solo artist based in Canberra. Jonny Telafone has been writing and recording music in his bedroom for as long as I’ve known him. The following is his 2007 release “Magik”. A collection of Low-Fi pop songs that span the early years of his recordings.

There is dark nostalgic undertone that resonates over the entire album; suburban boredom, sexual frustration and the occult all make up the persona of Jonny Telafone. Check him out at Last FM here.
